Born in Dunedin, Otago, Newton came through Otago's youth system - playing for their age group categories as well as the A side. But nothing bigger could materialize and he decided to switch base and that is when Wellington came calling for the right-arm medium pacer.
His first experience at the highest level came in their domestic T20 competition in 2015 against Auckland and almost two years later he made his List A debut for Wellington. His maiden first class cap was given a couple of months later in January 2018.
In the nine games that Newton played during his first season, he returned with 21 wickets at an average of 29. Wellington awarded his performances by signing a new contract with him at the end of the season.
