Biography

An alumnus of the increasingly productive Voorburg CC development programme, slow-bowling all-rounder Aryan Dutt was seen as a triple-threat talent coming up through the Dutch youth system, often opening both the batting and the bowling before turning to offspin. It was primarily the latter skill that earned him an early call-up to the Netherlands senior side, still a teenager when he made his debut in a T20I trilateral series against Nepal and Malaysia in April of 2021, followed swiftly by his ODI debut against Scotland a month later. As for many of his generation Dutt’s early career was something of a baptism of fire, stepping up from club cricket direct to the highest level, with the Netherlands at the time competing primarily against full member opposition as the sole associate in the now-defunct ODI Super League. The competition afforded Dutt the chance to bowl at, and at times get the better of, some of the best bats in the game. Quinton de Kock was his first wicket in the competition, and he would thrice dismiss Windies skipper Nicholas Pooran, going on to add the names of Jason Roy and Babar Azam (twice) to his distinguished list of victims.

A tall, imposing off-spinner who plays a strangling, spoiler role - Dutt’s wickets are generally born more of variation of pace and angle coupled with a frustrating discipline than any prodigious turn. Though a capable bat at domestic and age-group level, possessing the power to clear the ropes down the order, he has yet to make much impact with the bat at international level. Nonetheless Dutt has already staked a claim to the role of first-choice right-arm finger-spinner for the Dutch, and with it a place in the 2023 World Cup squad.
