Out come the players. Sri Lanka get into a huddle before taking the field. Another overcast day at The Oval but it isn't nearly as bad as it was yesterday.
10:31 local, 09:31 GMT, 15:01 IST:
18:33 Local Time, 17:33 GMT, 23:03 IST: Unfortunately and rather inevitably, stumps have been called. Light wasn’t very good throughout the day and it was hardly going to get any better once they walked off at 6pm local. England will be pretty pleased with how things went today. With conditions being extremely overcast, batting was expected to be challenging but it wasn’t owing to some frankly awful bowling from Sri Lanka. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the Sri Lankan bowlers were all over the place. There was no sense of control and they couldn’t hit the right lines and lengths consistently when that was probably all they needed to do to reap some rewards in these beneficial conditions. Instead, it was England that feasted on all the loose bowling that was on offer and they scored at a striking 5 runs per over. Ben Duckett played an entertaining knock of 86 earlier but the highlight was a domineering century from Ollie Pope who’d been under the scanner leading up to this game. Sri Lanka have a lot of slack to pick up and they’ve got to do it quickly tomorrow if they are to not fall further behind in this game. We’ll be back tomorrow at 11am local.
18:11 Local Time, 17:11 GMT, 22:41 IST: The umpires, who were still out there, have just walked off much to the displeasure of the crowd. Light is very unlikely to improve this evening so it's almost like we're waiting for the inevitable word to come across.
Ollie Pope now has the second-fastest hundred by an England Test captain (off 102 balls), after Graham Gooch, who had got there in 95 balls against India at Lord’s in 1990.
17:54 Local Time, 16:54 GMT, 22:24 IST: Boos as umpire Chris Gaffaney has the lightmeter out and places it on top of one of the stumps. Off they go. Sri Lanka don't mind this. They are smiling even as a few players congratulate Ollie Pope, Mathews, Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis among them - that's a nice touch. The England skipper walks off to a standing ovation. It has gotten dark and anyway they are playing with lights on. Pope is welcomed back inside by Jordan Cox and Bashir with pats. Unless the light gets better, it will mostly be stumps. Let's wait though for the official confirmation.

Asitha Fernando to Ollie Pope, FOUR, shout of "yeah" as Ollie Pope gets to 100. Mark Butcher on air has this stat: Becomes the first batter in history to get his first 7 Test tons against different opponents. That is some stat. Full outside off, the field was up and he opens the face of the bat to drive it well and wide of backward point, as soon as he hit the square drive and it was into the gap, he pumped his right fist and has a look at the dressing room as he pumps his fist. Out comes the helmet and Stokes watching on applauds by clapping. Fine knock this and a welcome return to form
Deep backward point up.
