Day 4, 10.25am local: This Test has progressed at a quick pace. In fact, we might get a result today itself. Hello everyone and a warm welcome to the fourth day's play of the second Test between England and Sri Lanka. The visitors would have been the happier side when they reduced England to 216/6 on the opening day after opting to bowl. But things have gone downhill for them since then. Centuries from Root and Atkinson powered the home team to 427 and then the four England seamers got more out of the slow-ish deck than their counterparts as they picked two wickets apiece. After gaining a 231-run lead, Root once again starred with the bat with another classy knock to overtake Alastair Cook and become the England batsman with most Test centuries. The conditions were tricky in the final session yesterday and SL lost a couple of wickets before bad light forced early stumps. England are mighty favourites to take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Can Sri Lanka put up a fight with the bat? We'll find out. Action coming your way in half an hour.
18:00 Local Time, 17:00 GMT, 22:30 IST: Light doesn't improve and it's stumps! England are in a dominant position in this Test. With an overnight lead of 256 runs, they decided to bat positively although time wasn't an issue. They lost wickets in the process but kept scoring at a brisk pace. Duckett and Pope fell in the first hour, Harry Brook played a little cameo and Jamie Smith looked in good touch before being trapped lbw by Jayasuriya. Joe Root kept ticking along and made history to become England's leading Test match century scorer. 34th in Tests, 7th at Lord's, 2nd in this match, 50th across all formats in international cricket and his quickest in the longest format. He wasn't content with the batting records. He also took a couple of catches at first slip to become the fourth fielder to take 200 catches in the history of Test cricket. 483 was the target and the England pacers bowled in good areas in overcast conditions. Madushka and Nissanka nicked behind and Pope was forced to operate with spin as light deteriorated. Sri Lanka sent Jayasuriya as nightwatchman or lightwatchman as termed by Nasser Hussain. Bashir and Root bowled six overs in tandem before Pope had enough. Right then, this is the equation - 430 runs vs 8 wickets in 2 days. Tune in tomorrow to find out how the action unfolds.
17:05 Local Time, 16:05 GMT, 21:35 IST: The Sri Lankan substitute fielders bring the batting helmets. Pope can't bring on his seamers though and he doesn't want to bowl any more overs of spin. The players are walking off due to bad light. The umpires, meanwhile, take the reading. Play can resume if light improves. We have got until 6 PM local; if play doesn't resume by then, it'll be stumps.
