India, riding high after their exhilarating triumph in the T20 World Cup, will embark on their next challenge with a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. The series kicks off on July 6th in Harare.
Following the T20I retirements of senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, and with other key members from the World Cup squad being rested, India will field a predominantly young team for the upcoming five T20Is and three ODIs against Zimbabwe.
In a recent poll for Team India's next T20I captain, options included Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant. However, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain for this series.
Joining the squad after their World Cup duties in the West Indies are Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube. They will be accompanied by Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan, who were the travelling reserves for India's T20 World Cup squad.
This series also marks the maiden senior national call-up for promising IPL talents Abhishek Sharma, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande. Initially named in the squad, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was withdrawn due to injury, with the BCCI selecting Dube as his replacement.
With Rahul Dravid stepping down from his role as head coach, VVS Laxman will serve as the interim head coach for the tour of Zimbabwe. All matches of the series will be held at the Harare Sports Club in Harare.
